History of our Lacrosse Club
Lacrosse was first played in Australia in 1877 in Melbourne and soon made its way to Adelaide and regional South Australian centres. The West Torrens Lacrosse Club has a long and proud history as a family oriented sports organisation providing a recreation outlet for generations of men, women and children from the Western suburbs.
In the late 70's the club hit a low point and questions were asked about the club’s viability. A core of members then stepped up and convinced the Association that success and stability were not far away. They asked for the opportunity to develop a group of recently recruited juniors to complement numbers and to form the future of the club’s success along with some very talented players who had recently entered senior ranks.
History shows that the A-Grade (league) West Torrens team developed into the dominant force in the game for over a decade. Having made finals in 1988 and 1989, the club went on a spree of success rarely rivalled in any code of sport.
Ten consecutive League grand final appearances (1990-1999) that saw the Eagles premiers on no less than six occasions, made up of twin ‘three-peat’ successes (91,92,93 and 95,96,97) West Torrens set an Australian record for consecutive wins at League level, 69 from 1991-94.
The Eagles have a rich recent history of developing players to compete at interstate and international standard. Countless players have represented the state at junior and senior level. There have been players from West Torrens in every senior Australian team since 1994. Moreover, Eagles’ players have had their leadership skills recognized by being named Captain of the Senior Australian men’s teams in 1998 and 2002.
